VETERINARY CLINICAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT
The University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a driven radiologist to join the medical imaging faculty in the Veterinary Clinical Sciences department to advance clinical care, research and teaching in a supportive, collaborative, and leading academic environment. The tenure track medical imaging faculty position offers the stimulation of an academic appointment at a large veterinary medical center located within one of the nation’s top public research universities. The successful applicant will participate in the diverse missions of clinical or basic science scholarship, didactic teaching, clinical practice and clinical teaching, including mentoring of imaging residents. The University of Minnesota offers one-of-a-kind research opportunities in collaboration with centers across the University, including: the Center for Magnetic Resonance Research (CMRR), a world-class facility for human, translational, and basic science research that forms an integral part of the Department of Radiology in the Medical School; an NIH-supported Comprehensive Cancer Center that actively seeks to engage in multidisciplinary research; and colleges of Medicine, Public Health, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Science and Engineering. We have an immediate opening for one tenure track position to join a team of three contract (clinical) radiologists as well as a medical imaging research scientist who has close ties to CMRR and is available to foster collaborative clinical and basic research projects suited to the candidate’s interest.
The UMN Veterinary Medical Center is actively in the process of upgrading its 3.0 Tesla MRI scanner to be one of the most advanced and research-capable MRI systems in the nation to push the envelope for veterinary care and comparative research. In addition, the medical imaging service has invested in ultrasound equipment with elastography, contrast ultrasound, and image fusion capabilities. The diagnostic radiology aspects are structured around Carestream Picture Archive and Communication System (PACS), which is fully integrated with Nuance speech recognition capabilities linked to both the PACS and the electronic medical record.

Job Description: This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop a rewarding career in a supportive, collaborative, multi-specialty teaching hospital. You will have access to state-of-the-art imaging equipment, experienced support staff, and collegial colleagues. The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic, cohesive, patient-care oriented radiology team composed of two full-time ACVR board certified radiologists [contract (clinical) track], one part-time ACVR board-eligible radiologist [contract (clinical) track], a PhD medical imaging research scientist [tenure track], two imaging residents, seven dedicated imaging technicians, one MRI technologist, and a PACS administrator. The hospital is well equipped with Vet Ray and Philips DR; two Samsung RS80A and one Toshiba Aplio 500 ultrasound units; Philips ProxiDiagnost N90 digital fluoroscopy; Toshiba 64-slice spiral CT; on-site GE Signa HDx 3.0 Tesla MRI (slated to be upgraded to a new, advanced 3T MRI system in 2021); and NuCam gamma camera with Mirage software. The equine center is equipped with Kodak CR; Eklin and VetRocket DR; Asto’s Equina Standing CT; and Hallmarq’s Standing Equine MRI. PET-CT is available at the nearby on-campus Center for Clinical Imaging Research. Viewing software is Carestream PACS, and dictation is performed using fully integrated Nuance PowerScribe 360 speech recognition software.
Clinical responsibilities in the Medical Imaging Service of the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) will include small and large animal diagnostic radiology and contrast procedures, small animal ultrasonography, CT, MRI, nuclear scintigraphy, and consultations to VMC faculty/house officers. For the research aspects of this position (approximately 50% effort), there is an expectation for extramural salary support that can be achieved by leading competitive, high impact basic or translational research projects, through participation in pre-clinical or clinical studies, or by establishing collaborations with investigators across the University of Minnesota Health Sciences and/or industry partners. Anticipated workload distribution for the position will be 50% for scholarly activity and 50% split principally between didactic teaching and clinical service/clinical teaching. Final distribution of efforts in the section and department is negotiable with the optimal candidate. Teaching responsibilities will include providing clinical instruction to interns, residents, and professional students as they rotate through the Medical Imaging service and participation in the Radiology didactic courses. Mentoring responsibilities will include mentoring and training imaging residents. Other job responsibilities include personal development, outreach, and service to the College of Veterinary Medicine and other veterinary-related professional organizations. The option to perform contract teleradiology during business and non-business hours for salary augmentation is negotiable.
There are many opportunities for collaborative research within the College as well as with faculty across the other five units of the Health Sciences (Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, Nursing, and Dentistry), and this is an expectation for this position.
Qualifications: DVM/VMD or equivalent veterinary degree and evidence of research productivity. Preference will be given to individuals who are board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Radiology or European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging and who have an advanced degree. However, board-eligible applicants who will have successfully completed a Radiology/Imaging residency by the employment start date are also encouraged to apply. The applicant must be eligible for Minnesota state veterinary faculty licensure. We encourage applicants who have outstanding clinical, interpersonal and teaching skills to apply. Training and/or research experience in MRI or another modality that complements the strengths of the current imaging faculty will also be viewed favorably.
