This appointment’s primary focus will be providing clinical instruction and service to our comprehensive oncology section in the Veterinary Health Center (VHC). As part of this appointment, the successful candidate will:

·         Obtain and maintain license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Missouri (faculty or regular licensure) within no more than 3 months of start date, then complete DEA registration and get BNDD certificate;

·         Provide clinical instruction of students (professional), interns, and residents in radiation oncology and related fields.

·         Contribute to the professional and graduate curriculum by participating in classroom and laboratory instruction. Opportunities for online instruction is possible.

·         Represent the University, College, and VHC through outreach activities for animal-owning public, referring veterinarians, or other relevant stakeholders;

·         Provide consultation to off-site university-operated clinics;

·         Participate in the discovery process by participating in clinical, resident or house officer research;

·         Participate in faculty governance activities.

Initial appointment will begin as soon as an acceptable candidate can be identified and hired.

Comprehensive Oncology Service:

The successful candidate will work with three additional boarded radiation oncology faculty members to enhance referral caseload at two veterinary radiation therapy facilities.  Clinical duties will primarily be focused on the Veterinary Health Center (VHC) at our teaching hospital in Columbia, MO. In addition, the faculty member will contribute to planning and case management of cases seen at our satellite facility in Wentzville, MO.  Teaching duties will include veterinary students and training of residents and interns.  The Comparative Oncology, Radiobiology, and Epigenetics Laboratory (COREL) offers the opportunity for participating as a collaborator in basic, translational, and clinical research.

The University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine has a rich history of radiation oncology and radiopharmaceutical therapy. We utilize an Elekta Infinity HD linear accelerator capable of stereotactic radiation therapy, 4D cone beam CT, volumetric modulated arc therapy, and image guided radiation therapy.  The linear accelerator is supported by the Mosaiq record-and-verify system, and Monaco treatment planning system.  The University of Missouri also boasts unparalleled access to a radiopharmaceutical pipeline, and an advanced radiation isolation ward, which facilitates the use of yttrium-90, radioiodine, samarium-153, and various Positron Emission Tomography (PET) agents, while maximizing patient and personnel safety.

MU Radiation Oncology functions as part of a comprehensive oncology service that consists of 4 ACVIM medical oncologists, 3 ACVR radiation oncologists, and 2 ACVS, fellowship-trained surgical oncologists.  The service also has six medical oncology residents and three radiation oncology residents in training.

In addition, The University of Missouri has a satellite veterinary clinic located in Wentzville, MO which services the greater St. Louis area.  The veterinary services at this location include medical oncology, radiation oncology, dermatology, and clinical trials.  The hospital features a Varian 21EX linear accelerator with 128 leaf MLC, portal-vision, and Mosaiq record and verify system, a radiography suite, a chemotherapy hood, and a Canon Aquilion 32-slice CT scanner.

The faculty member would have access to the COREL laboratory.  This laboratory is equipped for a variety of basic science research in the fields of oncology, radiation biology, and epigenetics.  This laboratory has equipment to support culture of human and canine cell lines, polymerase chain reaction, gel electrophoresis, and preparation of sequencing libraries.  The laboratory also houses an automated live cell imaging suite including fluorescent and phase contrast microscopy.

The University of Missouri boasts the world’s largest University-based research nuclear reactor in the MURR.  The reactor and the associated cyclotron provide the University of Missouri with a unique arsenal of radiopharmaceuticals for use in translational and clinical research.  The College of Veterinary Medicine has a long history of collaboration with MURR.

Minimum Qualifications

·         DVM or equivalent degree; and,

·         Diplomate status or eligibility for certification by the American College of Veterinary Radiology (Radiation Oncology) or completion of radiation oncology residency training by start date.
